If you are taking a career in Engineering and Quality Management in the manufacturing, pharmaceutical, healthcare, technology or even service industries, your employers will often consider Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma qualifications as a good-to-have skill and even must-have profile in some certain cases.

Normally, an engineer or process analyst start the career with some basic knowledge of problem-solving skills in partcular and lean six sigma tools in general. Based on that, you have already started with “White-belt” six sigma level. And then, you start at the Green Belt level and progress to Black Belt levels. Global Accreditation Brings Credibility

Since there is no single official body authorized to conduct Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma training and certification, many different companies have developed guidelines and offer training and certification. However, there are some accrediting bodies recognized by leading global organizations and bodies, one of them is The American Society for Quality (ASQ) ensures that professional Six Sigma training and certifications are conducted according to global industry standards.

It is not easy to be certified by ASQ by paying the money for training and then get the certification after the training. No! That is not the way ASQ does. Like to IELTS and TOEIC English certification, you have to take the international exam to prove a certain required amount of knowledge with strict rules. Besides you have certify some additional criteria, such as professional working experience, number of six sigma projects and amount of saving, number of six sigma methods used. Certification Eligibilities, Examinations and Responsibilities

There are different Six Sigma course eligibility criteria, examination processes, and jobs available for certified professionals. 

Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB)


As described earlier, ASQ requires candidates to have at least three years of full-time experience in one or more areas mentioned in the CSSGB Body of knowledge.


Each candidate must pass a written, multiple-choice exam lasting four hours long and comprises of 100 questions to measure comprehension of the body of knowledge. Note that the exam is primarily offered in the English language. These exams are delivered via PBT (paper-based testing) and computer testing as well. 

Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB)


ASQ clearly states that ‘You do NOT need to be a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt’ however you need to complete two projects with signed affidavits OR one completed project with a signed affidavit and three years of work experience in one or more areas of the Six Sigma Black Belt Body of Knowledge.


Each candidate is required to pass a four-hour long examination of 150 questions to measure your comprehension of the Body of Knowledge.
